[Via Harry's Place] I knew that Simon Jenkins was leaving the Times to join the Guardian, which was great news, but the icing on the cake is learning that David Aaronovitch is going the other way. When he wrote for the Independent I used to think, 'Well, the GuardianObserver is not as good as it used to be but at least it hasn't sunk to employing David Aaronovitch.' So the past few years have been painful, and the Guardian's op-ed pages intellectually fallow, although the Internet has allowed access to more thoughtful commentators in the Times, Telegraph and Spectator (such as Matthew Parris, Charles Moore and Simon Jenkins). I do not get moved or challenged nearly enough by reading the Guardian's regular columnists, except to anger that my money helps fund Aaronovitch, Bennett, Bunting, Aitkenhead, et al. One down, many to go.
