To call the Saddam trial a travesty of justice would be to imply that it bore a relationship to justice. Margaret Beckett, as foreign secretary, should be denouncing the flawed legal process and, especially, the homicidal sentence, but instead she has welcomed it. Saddam was one of the few people to have come out from the Iraq mess with his reputation at all enhanced, unlike his denouncers. It turned out that he was more impressive than either Bush or Blair, who remain jointly responsible for far more deaths than this man whom
