In February former UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter predicted that the US would start bombing Iran this June. Now it's June and he's written for Aljazeera claiming that the US's war against Iran has already begun, and therefore he was prescient. He alleges that the recent pre-election bombings in Khuzestan and Tehran were carried out by the Mujahidin-e Khalq (MEK), on the orders of the CIA. He provides no supporting evidence to back up his claim, but he's often been right in the past.
Last week in North London, four dissident Iranians were arrested by anti-terrorist police, suspected of "plotting terrorists attacks in Iran". Coincidentally or not, it was six days after the bombings in Iran. It's tempting to suspect that the arrested Iranians belonged to the MEK, and that the arrests revealed the political breach between London and Washington on using the MEK to destabilize Iran. The timing of the arrests lends credence to the theory that the MEK was behind the recent bombings.
The MEK is an apocalyptic, revolutionary cult. Its leader, Masoud Rajavi, believes he is, or has a hotline to, Imam Zaman, the Twelfth Imam of Shia Islam, aka the Mahdi, who's been in 'occultation' since the 10th century and is ready to return. The cult believes it is ushering in the new messianic age. The current Iranian leadership are cuddly liberals compared to the MEK leadership (see HRW). If Scott Ritter is right, the US is allowing its hatred of 'the mullahs' to blind it to the ambitions and the pathological nature of the MEK.
