I don't think you are right with this one. Muslims don't worship Muhammed, and regard him as a human being. But, at the same time, they love him and respect him a great deal. If someone attacks your mother (who you love and respect a great deal) would you sit there quietly, or speak out against the attackers? Also, bear in mind that Muhammed is a symbol of Islam. In other words, to attack him is another indirect way of attacking Islam and all Muslims too. That is another reason why they speak out and defend him. Finally, Muhammed didn't wish to be revered. I recall he said something about that, which I dug up via Google: "Do not unduly praise me like the Christians exaggerated over Jesus, son of Mary. Verily, I am only a servant, so say, `Allah's servant and His Messenger.'"
