Contrary to the record in Hansard, Gordon Brown said this in PMQs yesterday, to general hilarity, in response to David Cameron’s fifth question, in which the Tory leader had cited Alistair Darling’s previous opposition to the introduction of identity cards.
First of all, I may say to him that comments made about identity cards in the past have got to take into account what is actually happening now.

The House used to laugh with the PM – now it laughs at him. It was an inauspicious debut.
