It's quite a rollicking yarn, and it does raise the question of quite why, after all that, he decided to become a hack, but is all his other work conducive with being in MI6? The truth may be more mundane than we think.
Shaphan
I'm not implying he is with MI6. My guess is that he reached the secret inner sanctum via his TA service. From there into the SAS(R), or something similar, and from there, perhaps, into De la Billiere's hush-hush outfit. If a 'spook' is an SIS officer, then I doubt Frank is a spook. If 'spook' is used in a wider sense of crown agents (and govt. contractors) acting undercover, then I think Frank belongs in that milieu.
Dave Bell
How about the Honourable Artillery Company? Their website is a bit reticent about just what their TA elements do (The HAC Regiment), and reads much more like a rather special London club. In the 70s and 80s they did the same as the TA Regiments of the SAS, with a few, more ceremonial, bits and pieces. But it's rather easy to rush off into conspiracy theory territory on this. Still, it seems a very likely "something similar".
Bridget Dunne
HAC? Which is where the Resilience Mortuary was set up after the 7/7 bombings. Another interesting fact about 7/7 is that Martin 'Abdullah' McDaid was (ex?)SBS and running the Iqra bookshop in Beeston, never-questioned, never-interviewed in connection to the subsequent events. Fantastic post Shaphan. Gardener was (wrong-footed?) over the Glasgow airport incident when he passed up a message to Peter Sissons saying his London security contacts had said it was a "criminal police" matter, not a national security matter. He later changed his tune quite dramatically, even claiming that a 'suicide belt' had been found on Ahmed in hospital!

Sorry to rain on your parade - he was a TA officer in the Green Jackets.

Lets face it, if you're posh then you're going to know lots of other posh people, generals and the like. If Frank had gone to teacher taining college then he would know lots of teachers. Conspiracy?

Cowper-Coles got mentioned today at the Diana inquest.

Thanks, B. I'll check the transcript later.

Like you, I went to a second-rate Public School, but, unlike you, I don't harp on about it. The risible thing about your generally interesting article, was the secret, almost "kabbalistic" nod and wink insofaras the DOYs is concerned, which came at the end of an entertaining if incorrect read. I can assure you that the DOYs, in the time that you write about, did "what it said" on the tin. By the same token, the "tin's" label had specific purposes, comprising, as they did, three TA companies. 21SAS,10Para, and the normal people, 4RIrish Rangers. AND ALL THE SPOOKS UPSTAIRS. I only know this since I was one of the least productive but most persistant soldiers of my era. But the Barracks did provide great post-War soldiers. Whether the target of your article, Frank, meets with your own obviously pre-conceived ideas of life, whether this life be within or without the FCO, pales into insignificance, when compared to your obvious need to confront him, and your unwillingness to do so privately. Why don't you just get on with it and confront him, despite him being younger than you? Confront him personally, That would be my advice. You seem to have allocated several portions of invective towards someone who has probably done you no harm. And, oh, ny the way, just to fulfill your "public-school-conspiracy" thing, I sold my philosophy and history books to Billy's daughter. I assume must this must be a life which dissatifies you. A life you can't lead yourself. Frank gets my vote. I am too uneducated to know if you have insulted Frank in journalistic terms, since you can't elucidate anything in paticular that got your goat, but it did seem an awfully long diatribe. In the meantime, how did you fare, as the product of a second-rate Wiltshire school? I was shunted from a legendary Hapshire prep school, to a decidedley second-rate Dorset public one. I did far less well than you, I would hazzard. I wonder.

I find your blog frankly an insult to behold, and a veritable circus spectacle of bias and ill-advised internet guesswork. What business is it of yours to root about or pick holes in a sucessful and frankly, quite admirable mans life. He has both served country and self to an admirable degree. What has he done to you that you need to 'heal from' baring to have come from the same damn school? Bluntly you have some serious issues that need resolving, and your iration at the poor man comes across as childish

I decided that, whilst it may have added subconsciously to my response to him, it didn’t affect the basic problem, which was that I believed that Frank Gardner was a spook (I use the term loosely) pretending to be a journalist and it bothered me.

Because, I reasoned, if I had been a Saudi security officer, I wouldn’t have been at all happy having a spooky Brit poking about and asking questions under the guise of journalism, and I might well have engineered his shooting, to discourage any others.
